many of you are probably aware of what certain creatures are, what they eat, how long they live, who they interact with, but because there are so many different versions of these supernatural beings in history and current popular writing, we at NOH decided to create our own version of things. please follow the creature descriptions, they're here for a reason.
V A M P I R E S
vampires do not sparkle. they are not afraid of crosses, and the only reason they aren't fond of garlic is because of its incredibly strong smell. they can't fly, and they don't turn into bats. a vampire has heightened abilities such as hearing, smell and vision. they are also much faster and stronger. vampires also have the power to plant suggestions in the minds of humans simply by looking them in the eye and their saliva contains the power to heal small wounds. sunlight weakens a vampire and if they spend too much time in it, they may collapse. older vampires can handle the sun much better than newborns. evolution has cause vampires to have retractable fangs, in order to better fit in among humans.not many things can kill a vampire. a stake to the heart is the most useful method of killing, however, dynamite, explosions and anything else that might rip them to shreds or decapitate them works too.vampires can withstand multiple wounds, and their bodies can heal in minutes. the more damage, however, the longer it takes to heal. vampires are not able to heal around protruding objects, which is why staking works so well. the loup-garou is one of the only creatures fast enough to be considered an enemy of the vampire, however, witches and fairies can also inflict a lot of pain. vampires are ruthless creatures. they drink human blood to satisfy their thirst. older vampires can consume human food and drink, although it offers them no nutrition and could potentially cause an upset stomach. an older vampire can also go longer without feeding (anywhere from six to eight months) although they will be in a very weakened state. only pathetic and incompetent vampires feed on animals. vampires do not need to kill in order to feed, but some of them take too much pleasure in doing so. vampires do not care for humans, although there might be a select few who enjoy their company. these are generally newborns or vampires who weren't made of their own accord, as they mourn their human lives and crave being near the light a human carries. in order to create a vampire, there must be an exchange of blood, and it is an incredibly painful process. the vampire cuts open one of his or her own veins and offers it to the human, who must then drink it. within ten minutes, all of the human's blood is forced out of every available orifice--eyes, ears, mouth, nose--by the vampire's blood until it has completely claimed the body. the human must then sleep for two nights, and the transformation is complete. a vampire is completely attached to their maker or sire, and cannot escape this bond. vampires do not age, they forever appear as they did when they were turned.

the term witch also refers to a male with magical abilities. witches don't usually look any different from humans. some might however, choose to dress new-agey or in the gothic style, but that is up to the individual. witches can be either good or bad, meaning they practice either white or black magic. the witch does not decide which side they will practice, though. it is something they are born with, part of their personality. selfish and vain people tend to be in the dark arts spectrum while selfless and generous people lean towards the light. witches need to practice their magic, they are not able to just wiggle their fingers. more demanding spells require ingredients, and chanting under the moon specific to the spell, while simpler spells require only a few lines said by the witch. each witch, with practice, can accomplish a lot. each witch has an affinity for one of the four elements; fire, air, water, earth. the most complex spells often require a witch to represent each element. a witch comes into their powers between the ages of 13 and 16. witches age as humans do, although there are known spells that slow aging down or minimize the appearance of older age.

hunters are humans with slightly better hearing, speed and hand-eye coordination. they are trained from a young age (14 or 15) to hunt a specific creature. because of all the training required, a hunter is not able to hunt more than one creature, but it also means that they are exceptionally good at hunting the one they do hunt. hunters, for unknown reasons, age half as quickly as a human, but only after reaching their training peak at age 20.

ghouls are grotesque creatures that most other creatures hate. to humans, they appear to be normal, but to supernatural beings, they are decaying masses of flesh and bones, their teeth rotting out of their skulls. ghouls feed on corpses, often having jobs in morgues or cemetaries to obtain the freshest dead bodies. thy are not above digging up graves, however. ghouls can be killed if fed the flesh of a still living being, by not feeding at all for two weeks, or by being set on fire. hunters often prefer to capture them and let them starve as opposed to the other two methods.

fairies are interesting beings. their powers are great, and cannot be completely explained. they contain the very power of nature, and some are responsible for the changes in the seasons such a s making the leaves change colours in the fall, making flowers sprout in the spring and bringing frost in the winter. stronger fairies (those in higher positions in the courts as well as older ones) have more control mastery of their powers, they can achieve more than a common fairy. all fairies can glamour, although it does take a bit of practice to achieve a look that will stay. glamouring is an illusion magic, it can do things like change a fairy's appearance, turn leaves into money, stones into coins, etc. fairies don't often meddle in the affairs of other creatures, especially not those of humans. the only time they do is when it might potentially upset the balance of things if they didn't. there are three major types of fairies. those who belong to the seelie court are the 'good' fairies. they care more about fairness and are more forgiving. they occupy themselves with dancing and light-hearted pranks on humans and other creatures. those who belong to the unseelie court are the 'bad' fairies. they are violent and cruel. they love fighting and hurting things around them. they often kidnap fairies of the seelie court pr solitary fey and torture them for fun. solitary fey are fairies who do not belong to either court. they have often left the court they were part pf either by running away or by permission of their monarch. fey who have not obtained permission lose their powers and wings within five years. they do, however maintain an other worldly quality. if their monarch allows them to return, they can regain their wings and powers. fairies eat and drink fairy food which is not recommended for humans, lest they want to live with the fairies forever. in order to stay hidden from fairies, you can turn your clothes inside out, or carry bread in your pocket. you can also leave milk or cream in a bowl on your doorstep as an offering. fairies are generally invisible to humans, however, there are a select few who have 'the sight'. these humans can see fairies for what they really are, and are even able to see through glamour if they focus hard enough. fairies are immortal and can only be killed by a steel blade (steel weakens them) coated in vampire blood, or by another fairy.

loup-garoux is the french word for werewolf. these wolves are different from the standard story of changing painfully only during a full moon, wanting to eat chickens and having lots of hair. loup-garoux look like any other human may, with the exception that they are a little more graceful in their movements. a loup-garou can change whenever he or she wants, and when they do, it is a very quick change. one minute they are running as a human, the next as a wolf. loups undress before changing, as it is easier and less restricting. loup-garoux travel in packs, often claiming to be big families when they are in human form. they do their best to hide their true nature as they would be immediately hunted down if they were found out. they can be killed by silver (which burns their skin), with silver bullets being the preferred method because a bullet can travel faster than a wolf can run. when injured, a loup-garou reverts back to their human form if they were in wolf form. once a month, on the full moon, the loup-garoux hold counsel in the woods. this is when all of the loup-garoux get together, no matter what pack they are in. the king of all loups leads the ceremony. a human (often a homeless person or prostitute) is brought before the loup-garoux and is told that if they reach the outskirts of new orleans before they are caught, they get to keep their life. if not, they are dinner. the leader releases the human, who gets a head start while the king changes into his wolf form, every other loup following suit. the hunt is then on. there are some who love this time of the month, who relish the hunt, who see humans as prey. there are others though, who only enjoy the speed a wolf can acheive, who love feeling the change. loup-garoux can kill vampires with their teeth and claws. a loup-garou is born as such and only can they turn others on the wolf moon, the full moon of January -- one night every year.

ghosts are the left overs of someone who has passed away. no one knows what it is that makes them ghosts, or why they even exist, but most people have good guesses. the most common types of ghosts are those who either have unfinished business, or who have died violent / unjust deaths. the latter may include accidents, such as a car crash or a house collapsing, as well as murder. ghosts are made up of energy, therefore, it requires a good amount of energy to manifest themselves. ghosts can occasionally move objects and touch the living, but that also requires a lot of energy. tragically, ghosts can see other ghosts and communicate with them, but they can't help them move on. a ghost can move on if they are able to complete the unfinished task that kept them tied to earth or if all their remains are burned. the latter is a common practice among ghost hunters. ghosts can be either good or evil, depending on how they use their energy. some prefer to open doors and turn on lights, while other choose to throw chairs and push people down stairs. whether they are good or bad generally depends on how angry the person is about their death, although it could be a personality trait carried through death from their human lives. a ghost is often tied to a specific place or object that had great meaning to them while they were alive, although it seems that all of the magical energy flowing through new orleans these days is enabling the dead to wander around the city, no matter where they died or what they were attached to.

demons are the most difficult creature to explain. their powers are nearly limitless, and they cannot be killed by just anyone. a demon hunter must preform a proper exorcism of the demon from their host body, which returns them to hell. finding their early remains is the only currently known method to officially kill them. all demons must take on a host by either possessing it, or by bringing a child into the world with a mortal. possession is the easiest way, as having a woman give birth to a demon is trickier and longer. demons, however limitless their collective powers are, do not have every power themselves. each demon represents something different, and can affect only that thing powerfully. this was planned by satan himself so that no one could overthrow him and become the king of hell. every demon, does however have a few basic powers such as the ability to possess a human body, the ability to move objects with their minds, they have also demonstrated the ability to read minds. they have superhuman strength and enhanced endurance. while hosting a demonic entity, a human's body can be made to perform extraordinary feats and resist damage. however, when the demon leaves, the host often dies of its injuries. they can resurrect or heal people, but only if a deal is made. Higher demons have a few extra powers on top of the ones just listed such as mind control, pyrokinesis, injury to humans by thought, destruction of objects with telekinesis, resurrecting people at will.(see the ban list for a full list of all the demons available.)
