Mabel Allistair was a relatively normal woman. She lead a normal life, had three beautiful children that she cared for dearly. But the universe just couldn't let her be happy. The family quickly fell into financial ruin, having invested money in what had seemed like a good idea, but had turned out to be a scam. Her husband, Spencer, left her shortly after for a younger, bustier, blonder version, and one of her children was found lying dead in the street, cause of death unknown.
When the last of Mabel's money ran out, her landlord kicked her and her two children onto the streets where, for weeks they lived. Mabel watched her children grow sick, and she couldn't do anything to help. Food was scarce, and no one wanted to hire a woman who bathed in the basins of the local pub. Desperate, Mabel went seeking for answers, ways she could possibly make a bit of money.
One day, the woman came across an old tome in a dust covered book store. Yellowed pages were bound by thick red leather, a belt strap holding the novel shut. Across the front, in simple gold etched lettering read; The Key to Your Desires.
Intrigued, Mabel stuffed the book under her coat and headed out, claiming that she hadn't found what she had been looking for.
That night, while her children slept, the woman opened the book and peered at fading wording in the dim light of their last candle. The words she found were strange, telling stories of raising creatures to do a person's bidding. Reading on, she discovered that it was a recipe book, a book for summoning and cursing; a book of the dark arts.
Not sure whether she ought to believe in what she read or not, Mabel decided to test out some of the spells. First she began with little things--turning pebbles into coins. To her surprise, it worked. Knowing the great worth of the book, Mabel kept it about her person at all times. Soon, she was able to afford a small room at a motel, and food for her children. Figuring it was about time, she moved on to more complicated things, things that required expensive ingredients. The first few tries yielded nothing, and Mabel grew frustrated, but still she went on.
Then one night, Mr. Andrews, the landlord, fell dead. An autopsy showed a man in good health, no causes of death evident. He should not have died.
Ecstatic that her spell worked, Mabel bought the entire house that they had previously lived in, taking over what Mr. Andrews had left. It was from that moment on, that her soul began to show black spots. Of course, a soul is something one cannot see, but all of the dark spells had an effect on her innocence, her goodness. Soon, the spells in the book were not enough for the woman, and she wanted to try bigger, better things.
She recalled having come across a certain ritual that was supposed to raise an ancient being, one that would do all of it's master's bidding. Mabel recalled a name from somewhere, somewhere she couldn't recall, and decided to invoke it, to call upon him.
Late one night, just past midnight, she began the ritual. Drawing a circle around herself to protect against evils, she began etching symbols into the dirt floor of the cellar. The candles around her flickered, casting shadows and illuminating her wickedly eager grin.
She said the words according to the book, and called his name.
"Abaddon!"
It all happened quickly. In mere seconds, she was tossed to the floor, the demon lord above her. She cried and begged for mercy, but the lord would not hear it. She was a foolish mortal, calling him forth. He held her down, he knew that it wouldn't be too long before his strength disappeared, and he was pulled back into his own world. Mabel had not been a strong enough sorceress to send him into a body. He needed to do something, to leave his mark so that one day, he might be summoned properly. He needed a child.
Three months later, a girl was born. A girl who, at the age of two massacred her entire mortal family. Of course, she was never caught. For she had Abaddon at her side and in her mind. Selena was not born for the first time, she had been born several times, always when her father needed her. She had been given specific instructions. She was to bring the city down, followed by the world.
2007-
Demons were summoned and havoc was being wrecked, but somehow, the human race was able to survive. Abaddon's daughter had opened the door to the Underworld, just as she had been instructed to do.
2012-
The releasing of evil into New Orleans, much like the opening of Pandora's Box, raised other things, other creatures that had been long in hiding. They were brought into the world to defeat the evil, to protect the humans.
And the best part? No one is aware of the war going on.
